Donald Henry Coutu, of Sanford, ME, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Maine Medical Center at the age of 82. He was born on May 10, 1931 to Wilfred Coutu and Roseanna Becotte. On January 5, 1952, he married Beatrice Collette, and together they had 5 children. They were married for 27 years. She predeceased him on December 21, 1979. On April 3, 1981 he married Rose Morey who added 3 children to the family. They were married for 32 years.
Donald served his country honorably in the army during the Korean War while stationed in Japan. During his lifetime he worked at various jobs including: construction, Pratt & Whitney, Simplex, Kidder Press, and Wasco Products from where he later retired.
In earlier years Don and Rose loved to dance. Donald enjoyed Bingo and going to Oxford casino. He was always a very lucky man and would come home with various prizes which he happily shared with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved life! He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed his family and friends, greeting them with smiles that made them feel special. He will be greatly missed. At Seal Rock, where he spent the last 5 years of life, Don loved the "special food, and attention" that his caregivers (friends, as he called them) would give him. Donald is survived by his 5 children: daughter Marguerite MacDonnell and her husband Paul and their children Alice, Nolan, and Sean of Waterville; daughter Denise Day and her husband Dale and their son Samuel of Springvale; son Gerald Coutu and his wife Carol of Sanford and their children Kristen Penley and husband Joel, Jason Coutu and wife Kristen, and Ryan Coutu and wife Christine; daughter Colette Cushing and her husband Gary of Alfred and their children Jennifer Adams and husband Scott, and Gary II and his wife Alyssa; and his youngest daughter Ann Roffman and her husband Jim and their children, Nathaniel, Julia, and Jacob of Galena, Ohio; his step children: Cathy Markland and her husband Clyde of Sanford and their children, Stacey and Shanna; David Morey and his wife Sandi of Portland Oregon; and Pat Davis and her husband Andy of Sanford and their children Lindsay Wirsing and her husband Eric, and James and his wife Amanda. He was predeceased by his grandson Jeremy Markland. Donald was also blessed with 17 great-grandchildren.
Donald came from a large family of eight children. Surviving are his sister Beatrice Sicard of Massachusetts, brother Maurice of Saco, brother Richard and his wife Sally of New Hampshire, brother Raymond and his wife Fran of New Hampshire, brother-in-law Norman Sevigny of Saco as well as sisters-in-law Marie Jacques and Clarisse Collette both of Sanford. He was predeceased by his sisters Rita Sevigny, Lillian Normand, and Bertha Laroche. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald was a communicant of St Ignatius Parish, a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2231 and a former member of the Sanford Lion's Club.
Visitation hours were held from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the LaFrance- Lambert and Black Funeral home on 29 Winter Street in Sanford, ME.A Mass of Christian burial celebrating his life was held at 10:00 a.m. on October 23, 2013 at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave. in Sanford, ME.
