POPPE - BELL

Miss Lula Mae Poppe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poppe, of Deshler, and Max A. Bell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Bell, of Hebron, were united in marriage in St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Wednesday evening, December 26.

The Rev. R. L. Hafner performed the double ring ceremony at 7 o'clock, with Orva Poppe, sister of the bride, and Donald Hartley, friend of the couple, as witnesses.

The groom left last Thursday for the Naval Training Center in San Diego, Cal., where he is presently stationed. The bride will remain here at the home of her parents.

Lula Mae (Poppe) Bell was born September 5, 1933 to Frank and Emma (Weiss) Poppe. She was the 8th of 11 children born to that marriage. She passed away June 6, 2015 at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron, NE at the age of 81.

Lula was born in Carleton,NE and raised in Thayer County, she was confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Deshler on March 30, 1947 and graduated from Deshler High School, with the class of 1951.

On December 26, 1951 she married Max Bell, this union was blessed with seven children.

Max and Lula lived in California for ten years during Max's time in the Navy. When he was discharged they moved to Hebron and then to Deshler.

Lula worked all her life, from building grain bins, to working at various restaurants, before owning their own, the Deshler Drive Inn. It was a great hangout for the kids after school and men for their coffee breaks during the day. She taught many young employees how to make the perfect ice cream cone and shake. She and Max also managed the Deshler American Legion club for many years. They served many meals and catered countless weddings there. But her most favorite job was undoubtedly being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She enjoyed playing cards and traveling to area towns to play Bingo. She was always in the mood for a good game of rummy and her bingo supplies were always in the car in case she heard about a bingo game going on.

Lula is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, brothers Harold, Lavern, Virgil, and Leonard, who died as an infant, a sister Francis, who died when she was 9 and grandson Taylor HorseChief.

She is survived by her children, sons; Bruce and wife Teri of Hastings, Nebraska, Lonnie of Deshler, Douglas and wife Renell of Colby, KS, and Gregory and wife Sharon of Deshler. Daughters; Melanie Hansen and husband Wayne of Hastings, NE, Valerie Rush and husband Joe of Lincoln, NE, and Tami and fiancée Travis Schoenrock of Superior, NE, along with 27 grandchildren, and 48 great-grandchildren, brother Robert of Hastings, sisters Berniece Dorman, Phyllis Wulf and husband Leroy, and Orva Hartley, all of Hebron and Lois Burton of Plattsmouth, NE and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 10, 2015 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler at 10 AM. Officiant will be Pastor Brian Francik, organist Joyce Schmidt, casket bearers grandsons; Chris Bell, Jeremy Bell, Justin Bell, William "Nick" Arocho, Joshua Arocho, Samuel Hansen, Joseph Hansen, and Skylar Horsechief, visitation will be held Tuesday June 9 at Deshler Memorial Funeral Home in Deshler, NE 1PM to 7PM. Burial will be in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery Deshler, condolences may be left at www.krollfh.com, Deshler Memorial Funeral Home of Deshler, NE is in charge of arrangements.
