Lena Ruth was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Winters, Texas. Before she was a teenager her Mother passed away and she helped raise her younger brother, Jimmy. Lena Ruth graduated from Wesley Girls Academy as Valedictorian in 1935 in Austin, Texas. She married the love of her life in 1935. She and William were happily married for 70 years. Lena Ruth had many occupations throughout her long life including housewife, mother, farmer, and school bus driver. She was the First Woman Deputy Sherriff of Garza County. Later in life Lena Ruth worked for and retired from The Lubbock State School. While employed at The Lubbock State School, she attended South Plains College where she earned her degree in Sociology in her late 50's. Lena Ruth loved to travel and camp and considered herself a master at the art of mountain and tree climbing and at age 84, William banned her from her climbing exploits. Lena Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William Young and her brother, Jimmy Greer. Lena Ruth is survived by her loving sons, Malcolm Young and wife, Laverne, Erwin Young and wife, Lynne, and Darrell Young and wife, Rita; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and her beloved dog, Molly.
