John A. Vander Linden, 65, Sheldon, died Saturday, Feb. 28, at his home.
Services were Tuesday, March 2, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. David Brower officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
John Vander Linden, son of William and Elizabeth (Van Ravenswaay) Vander Linden, was born June 9, 1938, in Ireton. He received his education in Ireton, Inwood and later Sheldon schools. He served in the U.S. Army 1961-63.
He married Loretta Kuiper on April 7, 1964, in Sanborn. He was employed with Joe Merley Excavating in Sheldon 1963-65 and Graves Construction as a heavy equipment operator from 1966 until his retirement in 2003.
He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon, serving as a Sunday School teacher, elder and deacon.
He was instrumental in starting the Maranatha Cycle Club, a charter chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Club in northwest Iowa. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, bowling, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Vander Linden of Sheldon; two daughters, LaCinda and Douglas Nielsen of Rock Valley and Rachelle and Kevin Hericks of Watertown, SD; six grandchildren; four brothers, Robert and Wilma Vander Linden of Sheldon, Jim and Rosella Vander Linden of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul and Phyllis Vander Linden of Ashton and Dennis Vander Linden of Phoenix; three sisters, Betty and John R. Kreykes of Sheldon, Julia and Robert Merley of Sheldon and Janice Vander Schaaf of Sanborn; and a sister-in-law, Norma Vander Linden of Anaheim, CA.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Vander Linden.
