Caroline, the daughter of Utah Mormon pioneers, was born in central Utah in the small town of Fillmore. As a teenager, she traveled east to find work, either over the mountains or 65 miles around them to the town of Richfield. Work was not steady and Elizabeth and Andrew Johnsen invited the girl to live in their home. Eventually 19-year-old Caroline married 64-year-old Andrew, at the urging of his wife, Elizabeth, on May 13, 1887 in St. George, Utah.
The family then traveled south to Mexico where they could live in peace, moving to Colonia Pacheco in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
A son was born to Caroline and Andrew in March 1890 and named John Andrew. His birth was met with much rejoicing. Sadly, Caroline died within a couple of years of her son's birth.
