The son of Jeremiah & Rebecca (Howenstine) George, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Guilford Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing there.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Chambersburg July 11, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 15 as a private with Co. D in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864.

He married Nancy Jane McKenzie March 7, 1867, in Chambersburg and fathered Emma A. (b. @1872). Nancy died in 1880, and he married Mary Ellen Warner ca. 1886, fathering Roy Ellsworth (b. 04/01/87), Mary R. (b. 07/??/88), Ruth Eneada (b. 12/16/92), and Nellie May (b. 05/??/95 - married Robert Henry Tyler). On April 26, 1892, he applied for a disability pension and received it.

He died with his daughter Ruth in Fayetteville, Franklin County, during a diphtheria epidemic. On May 18, 1910, Mary Ellen applied for a widow's pension and received it.
