John Saini was born in San Francisco, a twin to brother Eugene; together the first 2 of 3 for Italian immigrants Michele and Mary (Solari) Saini. After the birth of their baby sister, Virginia, the family moved to Healdsburg where the children were raised attending the local schools.

On the 24th of February, 1943, (just over a week shy of his 20th birthday) John enlisted in the Corps and soon went through training at Camp Elliott in San Diego.

On his first day of combat, Private First Class Saini was with his brothers in the 8th Marines (Hotel/2) of the 2nd Marine Division when they landed on Betio. Their mission was to secure the island in order to control the Japanese airstrip in the Tarawa Atoll; thereby preventing the Japanese Imperial forces from getting closer to the United States, and enabling US forces to get closer to mainland Japan. It would become one of the bloodiest battles in the Corps history.

It was November 20th (D-Day for the "Battle of Tarawa"), when young John - just 20 years old - perished.

In 2015, a non-governmental organization, History Flight, Inc., notified DPAA that they discovered an additional burial site on the island and recovered what they believed to be 36 United States Marines and Navy Corpsmen who died in the battle; they also conducted genealogy research and provided the contact information enabling the Marine Corps to reach out to the surviving family members.

On the 6th of May, 2016, it was announced that lab analysis, in conjunction with the totality of circumstantial evidence available, established PFC Saini's remains were recovered at that time.

Interment services are planned for June 11 in Healdsburg, California.

This memorial previously represented the memorial marker placed by PFC Saini's family when his remains were deemed non-recoverable. He is also memorialized among the Tablets of the Missing in Honolulu (56121235).
