Joseph Cooper was married three times. His first wife was Isabella Given (died about 1830, unknown burial location); his second was Mary Horning (1800-1852), and his third wife was Esther Miller (1811-1879). He was raised a Quaker at Sadsbury Friends Meeting near Christiana, PA, but was removed from the Quaker membership rolls in 1822 after marrying a non-Quaker (Isabella) and having the marriage performed by a "hireling" minister, according to the records of Sadsbury Meeting. He became a Methodist, and was one of the founders of the Enterprise (Bird-in-Hand) Methodist Church.
