Gene joined the U.S. Navy in September 1944 and trained on an LST, preparing for the invasion of Japan. Fortunately, the war ended and his LST served to repatriate Japanese citizens from the islands bak to the mainland of Japan.
He married Wilma McPheeters while on leave in May 1945.
