Entertainer. She was an African-American vaudevillian, saloon entertainer, international host, and nightclub owner. She got her nickname ‘Bricktop' from her flaming red hair and freckles. She made her stage debut at the age of 5, in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in Chicago at Haymarket Square. By the age of 16 she was touring the vaudeville circuit. In 1924 she performed in Paris, later opening her own club, Bricktop. She did radio broadcasts for the French government form 1938-39, returning to the US before the start of WWII. From 1943-1958 she opened and closed nightclubs in Mexico City, Paris and Rome. She made one recording "So Long Baby" with Cy Coleman in 1972.
