Mary F. Plowden-Wardlaw, 105, died on Monday, March 4, 2013 at the Essex Meadows Nursing and rehabilitation center in Essex. Mary was born on February 29, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Sarah (Chapman) Francis and Lewis Witherbee Francis.
Mary had been a resident of Brooklyn NY, Quissett MA, Harbour Island, Bahamas, Vero Beach FL, and most recently of Nonquitt MA and Essex CT. Mary was a Graduate of Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn NY, 1927; as well as Pine Manor College, Chestnut Hill MA, 1929.
Mary had many passions in life; she was an avid gardener, watercolorist, traveler, and sailor. She was also active in many different organizations such as The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, American Boxwood Society, Garden Club of Buzzards Bay, New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the New Bedford Yacht Club.
Mary leaves a daughter, Sally Stanton Hasted of Wilton CT; a son, Peter West Stanton of Weston MA and Harbour Island, Bahamas; two grandchildren, Peter West Stanton Jr. of Stamford CT and Cornelia Crawford Stanton of Chicago IL; two step-sons, James Plowden-Wardlaw of NYC and Stephen Wardlaw of Taos NM; a step-daughter, Emily Stanton Pierce of Townsen MD; a nephew, John C. Francis of Charlotte NC; and many step-children and grandchildren, in-laws and cousins.
She is predeceased by two brothers, Lewis W. Francis and Jack C. Francis; as well as two former spouses, Otis Cook Stanton and Newell Ormsbee Mason.
