Charlie 'Chuck' Murphy died Friday, May 29, 2015, after a lengthy struggle with cancer, at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden. He was surrounded by his loving family as he departed this life. He was 77.

Chuck was born in Manhattan, N.Y., and raised at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Lorreto, Staten Island, N.Y. Upon graduation from the Mount, he went on to join the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 31 years.

During his career, Murphy was chosen to become a commando in a special forces unit which was part of President Kennedy's elite force, answering directly to the White House. Completing that assignment, he transferred into the Military Air Lift Command at McGuire Air Force Base, where he served for 22 years as a flight engineer for heavy lift aircraft. Chuck completed two tours of duty in Vietnam, and achieved the rank of chief master sergeant.

After completing his Air Force career, he worked for several companies, before serving 15 years as a civilian in the U.S. Army, Department of Defense, CCOM, Fort Monmouth, as a logistics manager specialist. He graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree in Vocational Education, and earned a Master of Science degree from Central Michigan University. In total, Chuck completed 46 years of service to the federal government.

In his spare time he flew small aircraft, did some skydiving, and spent years golfing with military buddies.

Chuck is survived by his beloved daughter, Lisa Murphy Solarski (Art); and three grandchildren, Joseph Furio, Paige, and Gabrielle Solarski. Chuck also is survived by his loving companion of many years, Alice Davidson and her family.

His funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the First United Methodist Church of Moorestown, 446 Camden Ave., Moorestown, NJ 08057, where the visitation with the family will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at a later date in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church, designated for Youth Activities, or Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
