EXETER - Korean War Prisoner of War Cpl. Elmer Powers Richard, 20.

His declared death was on Dec. 31, 1950, in Korea.

He was born June 3, 1930, in Exeter, son of the late Ralph Sr. and Genevieve (Gaudette) Richard.

Elmer grew up in Exeter. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1948. He completed his basic training at Fort Dix in New Jersey before being sent overseas to Japan and then Korea. He served in the 15th Antiaircraft Artillery AW Battalion (SP) D Battery 7th Infantry Division.

Elmer was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was declared dead but his remains were never found until now. His surviving siblings would like to honor him now, on behalf of their parents, as this had been a lifelong struggle for the family.

He was predeceased by his siblings, U.S. Army, Gerard Richard; U.S. Navy, Henry Richard; U.S. Army, Ivan Richard; U.S. Army and Silver Star recipient, Ralph Richard Jr.; and baby Raymond Richard.

Elmer is survived by his sisters, Jeanette (Richard) McDonnell of Exeter, Mae Cutler of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Edward Richard (U.S. Navy veteran), of Middleton; many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: A calling hour will be held on the 85th anniversary of his birthday on Wednesday, June 3, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3, at 11 a.m., at St. Michael Church, Exeter.

Burial with military honors will follow in the Exeter Cemetery.
