The Independence Day weekend was marred by what Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen notes is the county's third homicide this year.

A July 3 press release from Allen states the body of Travis Darnell Bennett, 20 and of Wadesboro, was found slumped over inside his parked car on Friday night.

"Witnesses told investigators that Bennett was parked alongside Davidson Drive when a white Tahoe drove up beside him," the release states. "The passenger got out, and there was an exchange of words, and witnesses heard one shot. The white Tahoe immediately left the scene."

Allen's release states the fatal shooting occurred Friday in the Lilesville area about five miles east of Wadesboro.

It adds Anson County Sheriff's Office deputies responded that night about 10:20 p.m. to Davidson Drive in Lilesville following a report of a shooting.

Allen's release states Bennett was found shot once in the left shoulder by what is thought to be a high-caliber handgun.

The release continues that a vehicle matching the one described was later chased into Rockingham by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol; but the vehicle was lost near the North Carolina Motor Speedway north of Rockingham.

Allen's release states investigators believe illegal drugs were a big part of the case's motive.

Bennett's body was sent for an autopsy at the Charlotte office of the State Medical Examiner, the release states.

It adds that ACSO detectives have identified two possible suspects, but they haven't been located. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting the ACSO in this continuing investigation.
