SEGUIN — A man known for his love of community and eye for photography died Sunday at the age of 92.

For more than 50 years, Leon Kubala operated Leon Studio in downtown Seguin, where everyone went for family portraits.

However, he also photographed city events and local landscapes, which were sometimes displayed in the studio's front window.

Family friend Mary Lee Roberts was a frequent admirer of Leon and his wife Nelda Kubala's work.

"They always had their works in the studio window, and everybody had to pass by and see what he and Nelda put up. It was a showcase of the whole county," Roberts said. "They laid the groundwork for that kind of art."

Roberts said Leon Kubala was one of the kindest and sweetest men she ever met.

"That man has to be the greatest gentleman I have ever known," she said. "There was just no one like that gentleman. His were the old guard manners that are seldom displayed today."

Seguin Mayor Betty Ann Matthies knew Kubala all of her life and recalled having her photographs routinely taken by him when she was a child.

That tradition continued with Kubala photographing her for her high school graduation and her wedding.

"He just has been around so long. He was just such a part of Seguin," Matthies said. "I think all of us who grew up here knew him, and that is where we went to have our pictures taken. He and Nelda have contributed so much to the community."

A large part of Kubala's contribution to Seguin through many years can be seen on the walls of the Seguin Heritage Museum.

Many of the pictures captured everyday life in Seguin, which included parades and ribbon cuttings.

"Without him, we would not have that history," Matthies said. "He and Nelda were responsible for preserving that history through their art, and truly, their photographs are a work of art. We'll have that history for generations to come, who will be able to see how Seguin evolved through the years."

Gene Dietert, a friend of Kubala's since 1959, said there are not enough kind things to say about his friend.

"Where do you start?" Dietert asked. "He was very dedicated, hardworking and honest. He was just one of those kinds of guys who was always very friendly. He was just a good guy."

While their photography captured the spirit of the community, Matthies said Leon and Nelda Kubala's kindness captured the community's heart.

"They are just so well-loved," she said. "They were lovely people and part of the community, not just in their photography, but they participated in community events and were very strong supporters of our community. He will be missed."

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., today, in Goetz Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.
