German author and philosopher, friend of the classical philologist and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Born in Bartelshagen, Province of Pomerania, Prussia.

Ree, the son of wealthy, assimilated Jewish parents, studied law and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. His book The Origin of the Moral Sensations was written in the autumn of 1877 in Sorrento, where Rée and Nietzsche both worked by invitation of Malwida von Meysenburg. Nietzsche criticized Ree's thesis in the preface to his own work on the subject entitled On the Genealogy of Morals: "Perhaps I have never read anything to which I would have said to myself No, proposition by proposition, conclusion by conclusion, to the extent that I did to this book; yet quite without ill-humour or impatience." Ree fell to his death while hiking in the Swiss alps near Celerina. When the German scholar Hubert Treiber made a visit to Celerina in the 1980s to look for Ree's grave, he found that its site had been used for a later burial and there was no longer a visible trace of Paul Ree's last resting place.
