Gregory Butler Monroe

January 4, 1946 - May 25, 2015

Gregory Butler Monroe, 69, passed peacefully Monday, May 25th, 2015 after fighting a courageous 20+ year battle with Multiple Sclerosis in Middleburg, Clay County, FL. Born January 4,1946, in Jacksonville, Duval County, FL, Greg was the youngest son of the late Claude William “Bill” Monroe and Mary (Butler) Monroe.

Greg was a faithful member of Middleburg United Methodist Church, the Gideons, and the Shriners. When his family resided on West Road in Jacksonville, he and his family attended Glendale Community Church. He attended Hogan Spring Glen Elementary School, and he graduated from Englewood High School, where he played football for the Englewood Rams, Class of 1964.

He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and graduated from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. He was a lifelong Gator fan. He was an amazing father and friend.

His wife of 23 years, Linda Monroe, brothers, Van S. Monroe and his wife, Jane Monroe, and John Richard Monroe, Sr., daughters, Jennifer “Jenny” (Monroe) Dillon, and her husband, Anthony “Tony” Dillion, Jessica (Monroe) McCormick, and Robin (Monroe) Sivalski, son, Michael Glover Monroe, eight grandchildren, step-sister, Dr. Mary Lee (Arthur) Burrell, step-brother, William L. Arthur, III, nephews, Dr. V. Stephen Monroe, Dr. Michael H. Monroe, and John Richard Monroe, Jr., survived him.

His parents, Claude William “Bill” Monroe (1906-1966) and Mary (Butler) Monroe Arthur (1921-2014), and step-Father, William L. “Bill” Arthur, Jr. (1923-2012), predeceased him. They are all buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Duval County, FL.

Greg was a loving, strong, and kind-hearted man. His bright and shining light will be greatly missed.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Middleburg United Methodist Church, 3925 Main Street, Middleburg, FL 32068, with 1 hour prior visitation. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Road Middleburg, FL.
