STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Former Midland Beach resident Mildred Helene Lazowski, 95, of Edgewater, N.J., the devoted matriarch of three generations, died Sunday in Sunrise Assisted Living, Edgewater.

Born Mildred Helene Valletti in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, she spent her childhood summers at Midland Beach, where her family owned a bungalow. They converted it to a year-round home and became permanent residents in the late 1920s.

After graduating from Curtis High School, she began working as a legal secretary for a law firm in Downtown Manhattan.

She and Charles Schwartz wed in the early 1940s and she became a homemaker and mother of three. After Mr. Schwartz's death in 1961, she returned to work as a secretary and stenographer for the New York City Housing Authority at the South Beach Houses, and worked there for 22 years, until retiring in 1983.

In 1982, she and Thaddeus Lazowski were married. The couple enjoyed fishing and boating and were members of a fishing club. They relocated to Sarasota, Fla. in 1983 and to Bokeelia, Fla. in 1985. In 2005, Mrs. Lazowski settled in Edgewater.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed knitting and working crossword puzzles, and was fond of going to Chinese auctions.

While living on the Island, Mrs. Lazowski was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church, Midland Beach. In Florida, she attended our Lady of the Miraculous Medal R.C. Church, Bokeelia.

Thaddeus, her second husband of 25 years, died in 2008.

Surviving are her sons, Paul and Karl Schwartz; her daughter, Lynda Olender; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
