Nobel Prize Winning Chemist. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004 for his efforts in discovering the means of cells identifying old and damaged proteins and replacing them with new proteins. Their discovery has revolutionized the fight against cancer. Born to Jewish parents, his father was the proprietor of a flooring company. His family moved to Spokane Washington for the purpose of benefiting his brother who suffered from rheumatic fever. However due to his business, Irwin's father spent the majority of his time in New York. Irwin's first experience in the medical field was as an assistant in the psychiatric ward of a hospital. This experience ignited an interest in pursuing a career in science. He enrolled at Washington State College, where he studied Zoology and following service with the United States Navy during the closing months of World War II, he attended the University of Chicago, where he studied DNA while attaining his Doctorate in Biochemistry. After graduation, he became a member of the Yale School of Medicine's Biochemistry Department where he served for a decade. He would go on to Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. After retiring, he moved to California, where he took a position as a researcher at the University of California in Irvine.
