Paul M. Wittman, 72, a longtime Hagerstown-area resident, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Connersville to Charles and Helen Connell Wittman and had lived in Centerville before moving to the Nettle Creek area in 1960. The 1947 graduate of Connersville High School graduated in 19S1 from Purdue University and received his master's degree from Ball State University at Muncie in 1958 and his state superintendent's license in 1962. He taught elementary and secondary levels at Connersville, Centerville, Economy, Greens Fork and Hagerstown. He also was a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Nettle Creek School System until retiring in 1991. He served on numerous committees for agriculture and 4-H and participated in education and community activities. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cambridge City, and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Patricia Wittman; one son, David Wittman of Hagerstown; one daughter, Deb Arnold of Muncie; three grandchildren; one brother, Carl Wittman of Dublin; two sisters, Bertha Klein of Richmond and Alferida Homan of Connersville; nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Church, Cambridge City, with the Rev. Joseph G. Riedman officiating. Burial will follow at Brick Cemetery near Hagerstown. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown, where a prayer service will be at 8 that night. Memorials may be made to the Nettle Creek Classroom Teachers Association Scholarship Fund, co Mary Ellen Cain, Hagerstown Elementary School, 299 N. Sycamore St., Hagerstown, IN 47346.
