Enlisted in Company H of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years. Discharged for disability on December 7, 1862, at Baltimore, Maryland, on account of a gun shot wound which he had received in his left hip and spine during the battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. Darwin later re-enlisted as a Private in the Fourteenth Battery of the Michigan Light Artillery on December 31, 1863, for 3 years, at Detroit, Michigan. He was promoted to Corporal in March of 1864 and later mustered out of service at Jackson, Michigan, on July 1, 1865.
Darwin's first marriage was to Anna Straw in 1860 but she died in 1865. In 1867 he married Florence Hardy but she died in 1870.
The death certificate for Darwin gives his occupation as a Cooper and that his third wife's name as Elizabeth (Morris)Beebe who was residing in Jackson, Michigan at the time of his death. Her maiden name was Darwin. She had previously been married to Aaron Morris but he had died on April 23, 1876. Two children were listed in the Beebe household, Charles Beebe, born on November 28, 1876 and Florence Blair, born on February 14, 1878.
