Gladys Viola Attlesey was born on September 13, 1903, in Brooklyn, New York, the child of Andrew Richard Culver and Genevieve "Jennie" Leslie. Sadly, her mother passed away suddenly when Gladys was only 5 years old. She was raised by her widower father and her maternal grandparents until her father remarried in 1916. His new wife, Lillian May Perry, became a mother to Gladys, and her siblings, soon 6, were cherished by Gladys and she by them.

She married Charles Kirkwood Matheson on November 29, 1924, at the Moravian Churrch in then Woodland Park, Staten Island, New York. She lived with her new husband in Brooklyn, New York or almost 15 years. At the time of her separation, Gladys became roommates with life-long friends Popsy and Irla Miller and remained with them until her death.

In her working years, Gladys was an insurance underwriter for Metropolitan Life Insurance in New York City. She retired in the late 1950s.

Gladys spent her retirement in Hempstead, Westbury, Long Island. She fell ill with Lung cancer and passed away December 20, 1963, in Westbury, New York, at the age of 60. She is remembered to this day for her kindness and generous nature.
