1982 obituary. Burton F. "Joe" Long, 81, of 8 Chester St., died Sunday in a local hospital after a brief illness. A lifelong resident here, he was the son of George H. and Grace Burton Long, and attended local schools. He served with the Signal Corps in the Army during World War II. Mr. Long was employed with the New England Telephone Co. for 42 years. In his retirement, he was employed as custodian at the Portland Masonic Temple. He was a life member of Atlantic Lodge, the Maine Consistory, St. Alban's Commandery and was a member of the Legion of Honor of Kora Temple Shrine of Lewiston and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. His wife, the former Agnes Gorham, died in 1977. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James (Patricia) Moriarty of Danvers, Mass., and Mrs. Charles (Joan) Thielemann of Madiera Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at 749 Congress St. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth.
