He was an widower with one daughter. An Anglican clergyman, he had been ordained in 1733 and held several livings in parishes in and near Norwich. Since at least the mid-1740s, however, he had been spending a good deal of time in London. In 1748 he had been appointed the 'afternoon preacher' at Longacre Chapel by the bishop of London, and in the mid-1750s he was assisting at His Majesty's Chapel of the Savoy. By 1755 Frances and John may have already had a daughter who, according to the British Magazine, died in infancy. John Moore Brooke, their other child, was born in London on 10 June 1757.
