John Andrew Winn, 88, a resident of Zuni, Va., for 36 years, died Thursday, May 2, 2013, at his home.

John Winn was born in Norfolk on September 16, 1924, to the late Bertie Goodson and Charles James Winn. He attended school in Portsmouth and graduated from Cradock High School. After graduation, Mr. Winn entered the apprentice program at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard until he enlisted in the Navy during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to the Shipyard, retiring as a contracting officer in 1981. His career took him and his family to assignments in Athens, Greece and Rota, Spain before returning to the area in the late 1970s. After retiring from the Naval Shipyard, he worked at Associated Naval Architects. He was active in the Portsmouth Moose Lodge before moving away from Portsmouth. Mr. Winn was also a Master Mason and a long-time member of Western Branch Lodge #189, AF&AM. He was also a member and deacon of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, where he took great joy on working on the construction of the new sanctuary, as well as being a member of the Elizabeth Eley Sunday school class. In his free time he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and traveling, especially with his grandchildren.

Mr. Winn was the loving husband of the late Martha Winn and father of sons John, Jr. (wife Leslie) of Chesapeake and Kimball of Falls Church, and daughter Jennifer Winn Griffin (Wayne) of Zuni. He was the devoted grandfather of Kendall Griffin and Martha Ann Griffin of Zuni. He is also survived by his sisters, Bertie Campbell and her husband Fred of Chesapeake, and Marguerite Corley of Houston, Texas, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, 37527 Seacock Chapel Road, Zuni, with the Rev. Curt Faison officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
