William Ely was born on 10 January 1767, in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut, He was the son of Richard Ely and Jerusha Sheldon. He married Clarissa May Davis on 4 July 1811, in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. They were the parents of 3 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 21 February 1847, in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, at the age of 80, and was buried in Old North Cemetery, Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.
William H. ELY, attorney and agent for the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons, also known as the American Asylum of Hartford, Connecticut, arrive in Jones Valley, Alabama, to select "lands Congress had donated to the Hartford, Connecticut deaf and dumb asylum." v
ELY chooses four sections totaling four square miles at square miles at Frog Level, Alabama. vi
He deeds a quarter section to Jefferson County, provided the county locates it courthouse there. vii
In his honor, Frog Level changes its name to Elyton. viii
