Al was born March 2, 1931, in San Francisco. Though accepted to Stanford University, he ultimately attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1953 abd was commissioned ENS, USN.
Al served in USS SAINT PAUL (CA-73). After Submarine School he served in USS Wahoo (SS-565); then nuclear power training. His subsequent submarine assignments were in USS SCORPION (SSN-589); ENG/XO of USS BARB (SSN- 596); CO of USS GATO (SSN-615); SubDivCom , SubRonCom and Group Commander, all in Charleston, SC; Director Attack Submarines/Deep Submergence in OPNAV. Other major assignments were Director of Naval Research and Director RDT&E OPNAV, Washington, DC. Survivors include his wife, Janie, 4 children and 8 grandchildren….*

In 1978, Baciocco was nominated to Chief of Naval Research, serving until June 1981. At that point he became Commander of Submarine Group Six in Charleston. In 1982, he also took on the role of Commander of the Charleston Naval Base.
He retired in 1987, but has remained active in the Charleston community.
Baciocco and his wife M. Jane have been living in Mount Pleasant.
Al is survived by his wife Mary Jane Baciocco, four children and nine grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home’s Mount Pleasant Chapel. His Service of Committal will be in the USNA Cemetery at 11:30AM on Thursday, 6 August 2015.
