John Henry Quirk Jr., Air Force Lt. Col. (Retired), 87, died peacefully on May 21, 2015, at his home in Anchorage, Alaska. John was born to John Henry Quirk Sr. and Grace Mary McDonald in St. Peter, Minn., on Feb. 27, 1928, and was the oldest of six children.
From birth, John was a devout Catholic. He always showed initiative, being in charge of the 120-acre family farm at a young age. He was valedictorian of his senior class. He graduated from the University of Minnesota at Mankato with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. AЛer graduation, he became a USAF military jet pilot, piloting the B-58 Hustler at Mach-2.
On July 8, 1950, John married his sister Pat's best friend, Angela Kachelmyer, at the St. Peter and Paul Church in Mankato, Minn. Ŧhey were married for sixty years before Angela passed away in 2010. Together they had ēve sons, three daughters and were the proud grandparents of 18 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren. Never leaving his farming roots, John oversaw a 150-acre farm operation in Arkansas in the 1960s that was located near his Air Force Base.
After John's pilot career ended, he was assigned as USAF Radar Site Commander in Cold Bay, Alaska. He finished his military career at Elmendorf AFB, and retired in August, 1972. John then taught at the King Cove, Alaska, high school. He went on to teach business and agriculture at the University of Alaska Interior Campus at Galena, Alaska. He later moved to Ruby, Alaska, and built a small-scale farming operation. He loved the Alaska native culture, especially hunting and fishing, and developed special bonds with friends throughout Alaska. John sold real estate in Anchorage and the bush.
John will always be remembered for his faith, love of country, leadership and dedication to family. He was proud of his Lakota Sioux and Irish ancestry. He left this world peacefully, with the love of God and those around him. All family and friends will carry on his undying spirit of initiative throughout our lives.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Angela; mother, Grace; father, John; brother, Bob; sons, Stephen and Andrew; and his granddaughter, Tricia "Tootie." He is survived by his sisters, Mary Ann, Patricia "Pat" (Clem) and Grace (Jim); and brother, Bill (Carolyn); and sister-in-law, June; children, Jack, Mike (Monique), Sandy (Lloyd), Lisa (Vernon), Kate (Ed) and Tim; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held at St. Patrick's Parish, 2111 Muldoon Road in Anchorage on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. He was laid to rest at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors.
