Ethel Barbara Whitaker Nelson, 94, died January 19, 1994 in Salt Lake City of causes incident to age.
Barbara was born January 27, 1899 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England to Ralph Robinson Whitaker and Mary Jane Jones Whitaker.
She trained as a nurse in London, obtaining certification in every area recognized by British medicine; yet midwifery was always her special love.
After caring for her aged parents and younger sister, Nellie, in England until their deaths, Barbara immigrated to America in 1959 at the age of sixtyto join her other six sisters in Salt Lake City.
Upon discovering that Utah would not recognize her forty years of nursing experience, Barbara promptly returned to school and obtained her American R.N., then worked at the County Hospital until her retirement.
Barbara married Joseph S. Nelson in 1965 and assumed a new role as step-mother to Joe's four children and grandmother "E. B." to their progeny.
Barbara and Joe enjoyed fifteen wonderful years together, traveling extensively around the world; gardening; singing; serving innumerable callings in the LDS Church, including an LDS proselyting mission in Washington, D.C.; and opening their hearts and home to their many friends and family members.
Following Joe's death in 1980, Barbara charted yet another new course, using her incredible energy to pursue her interests in gardening, genealogy, music, and service to others.
As always, she devoted her inquiring mind to developing daring new interests and to meeting astonishing challenges with her characteristic optimism and determination.
These years were enriched by the remarkable bond and rollicking good times which Barbara shared with her sisters, Doris Shutt, Ivy Brooks, Frances Maud, Hannah Tomlin, Mona Sohn, and Violet Jeffery.
Barbara was preceded in death by her sisters, Doris, Mona, and Nellie. She is survived by her sisters, Ivy, Frances, Violet, and their families; her niece, L. Mary Sohn; and her step-children, Marian Nelson Warner, Noni Nelson Sorensen, J. Fielding Nelson, Judy Nelson Jardine, and their families.
Barbara's family extends warmest thanks to all of the health care professionals, family members, and friends who so graciously helped Barbara maintain her independence and self-sufficiency, with particular appreciation to Dr. Margaret Hecht and Barbara's most recent caregivers at the remarkable Hazen Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 22, 1994 at 12:00 p.m. in the Salt Lake Monument Park First Ward Chapel, 1005 South 2000 East, Salt Lake City. Friends may call Friday, January 21, 1994 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City, and one hour before the services at the church on Saturday.
Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
