NICKELSVILLE, Va. — Elisha Chester Smith, 83, Nickelsville, Va., passed away Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2013), at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born in Scott County, Va., on Oct. 29, 1929, to the late Morgan and Nealie Dean Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, his sisters, Carrie Fields and Jane Babb; brother, M.T. Smith and Bill Smith; and nieces, Patricia Tignor and Sheila Smith preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Ima Jean Smith, Nickelsville, Va.; daughter, Nancy Delano and fiancé, Dean Frye; grandson,

Michael Delano and wife, Dianne; great-granddaughter, who was his pride and joy, Amiya Delano; two special people who thought of him as a granddaddy, Denise McClain and Nichole Lane; sister, Betty Lane and husband, Bill; brothers, Emmett Smith and wife, Brenda, and Frank Smith and wife, Barbara; mother-in-law, Lois Babb; brothers-in-law, Willie Babb, Denny Babb and wife, Cheryl, Bennie Babb and wife, Judy, and Jimmy Babb and wife, Helen; sisters-in-law, Mary Houseright and husband, Kelcie; Brenda Swanner and husband, Farrell, and Helen Jones (who he raised) and husband, Harold; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gate City Funeral Home also at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. G.W. White and the Rev. Kenneth Kiser officiating. Greg and Becky White will provide the music.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, and Post #265, Gate City, Va., assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

Ron Delano, George Huffnagle, Billy Ray, Harold Jones, Stevie Ray, Caleb Ray, W.C. Taylor, and Jamie Smith will serve as pallbearers. Junior Keith and Bill Lane will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the graveside service.
