~ Claude North was one of the original crewmembers when the USS Bunker Hill CV- 17 was commissioned in 1943 and served on the carrier off the coast of Rabaul on the 11th. of November 1943. On May 11, 1945, near Okinawa, Bunker Hill was hit by a pair of A6M Zero kamikazes - a fierce Jap aerial suicide attack which, lasted for over an hour. The planes on deck were fully loaded with gasoline, ammo, bombs, torpedoes, and rockets, so when the suicide planes hit the ship it immediately turned into a blazing inferno, trapping and burning to death hundreds of the crewmembers on deck and below. Numerous others were seriously wounded or drowned. The majority of the crew was forced to abandon ship to escape death or to make room for the survivors and the wounded coming up from the engine rooms and other parts below the deck where the temperature were so hot many didn't survive. This was one of the longest sea battles of the war..
