Mr. John Wesley "J. W." Terhune, Jr., age 84, of Rome, passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at a local hospital.

Mr. Terhune was born in the Spring Creek Community on April 8, 1931, son of the late Rev. John Wesley Terhune, Sr. and the late Daisy Shaw Terhune.

He attended Spring Creek School, Rome High, ABAC and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1951. He was a Sergeant in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Terhune taught veterans at McHenry School where he met his wife, the former Dorothy Jean Thomas, and they were married on August 31, 1952. Mr. Terhune worked at the Farmers Mutual Exchange in Polk County, Rome Tobacco Company, was a partner in Norwood Griffin Co., manager at Rome Tractor Company and retired from Beltone Hearing Services.

Mr. Terhune was one of the original founding members and deacons of Woodlawn Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School for a number of years. He enjoyed farming, gardening, and watching The Bulldogs play football. In addition to his parents, Mr. Terhune was preceded in death by a sister, Daisy Litton, and by a grandson, Ed Chambers.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jean "D. J." Terhune; a daughter, Johnette Chambers, Panama City Beach, FL; a grandson, Bradley Chambers, Panama City, FL; two great grandchildren, Neveah Chambers and Jayden Eubanks.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015, at 2pm at the Woodlawn Baptist Church with his pastor, the Rev. David Nance, officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.


Both active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church on Monday at 1:30pm and include: Active: Kenneth Plemmons, Franklin Agan, Charlie Roquemore, Ray Terhune, Phil Litton, Butch Baldwin, Cary James, Bobby Youngblood, David Plemmons, and Rick Jacobs. Honorary: Active and Inactive Deacons of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1649 Cartersville Highway, Rome, GA 30161.

Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, has charge of the funeral arrangements.
