She taught elementary grades at country schools near Max for $50.00 per month.

In 1943, Ethel joined the war effort and enrolled in a training program in Minneapolis to become a Civil Service Inspector. She was transferred to Philadelphia to finish her training and later worked in a ball bearing factory. In 1944, she enlisted in the Spars, the women's auxiliary group, under the command of the Coast Guard. Ethel graduated from boot camp as a Seaman Third Class and served as a Storekeeper until she mustered out of the service in May 1946.

In 1950, she was admitted to the University of Denver in Denver, CO and earned a Master's Degree in Library Science. She worked as an elementary school librarian in Rochester, MN, Coalinga and Palm Springs, CA, Fort Collins and Sterling CO.
