U.S. Congressman, Mayor of Marietta, Ohio. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale College in 1816. He taught school for a couple of years before he moved to Ohio and settled in Canfield. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1821, and practiced as an attorney in Mahoning County. Later that year, he moved to Marietta, Ohio and became the Washington County Auditor from 1825 to 1837. He was a member of the Ohio legislature in 1839 and 1840. Elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio's 13th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1849 to 1851. He declined to become a candidate for reelection in 1850 and resumed his law profession in Marietta. Whittlesey became the Mayor of Marietta in 1856, 1860, and 1862. He died in Brooklyn, New York, while seeking medical treatment when he was 70 years old.
