Mr. McQuiddy, known as "J. C.", received his early training in public schools around Lewisburg, Tennessee. When he was 17 he entered Mars Hill College under the tutelage of T. B. Larimore, near Florence, Alabama. McQuiddy left Mars Hill College in 1887.

J. C. McQuiddy was baptized by James H. Morton upon hearing the gospel for the first time. He preached for the Church of Christ at Columbia, Tennessee. He was an editor of F. G. Allne's monthly publication, "The Old Paths Guide" in 1883.

In 1885 Mr. McQuiddy became office editor for the "Gospel Advocate." He was only 27 years old at that time. It was with the "Advocate" that Mcquiddy would do his greatest work. He worked closly with David Lipscomb, E. G. Sewell, F. D. Srygley, E. A. Elam, J. W. Shepherd, and others. It was through his efforts that the "Advocate" recieved it greatest outreach.

In 1902 he organized the J. C. McQuiddy Printing Company. It would become one of the largest printing companies in the South.
