Esther Marie McGuire, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother age 96, Carpio, ND, recently of Mandan, entered her heavenly home on May 28th with family at her side at Sunset Drive Continuing Care Center.

She was born, the 6th child of 7 to Claude C. Johnson and Amelia M. (Swanson) Johnson on February 11, 1919 at Donnybrook, North Dakota. The family soon moved to rural White Ash Township north of Carpio, where Esther was to live for most of 65 years. She attended White Ash Consolidated Township School near the family farm, with her siblings, for 11 years. As a senior, she and a neighbor girl boarded in Carpio, working at the hotel and attending Carpio High School, returning to the farm on the weekends. In 1936 she graduated as salutatorian of her class. With her lovely alto voice she participated in musical groups and with her height, she played defense for the girls’ basketball team. Her sisters would remark that Esther was her dad’s favorite, with her curly hair that he loved to tousle.

After graduation Esther attended Minot Business College and upon completion she worked in Mohall at the Renville County ASCS office. It was here that she met Howard McGuire, the love of her life. They married at the Methodist Parsonage in Minot on August 9, 1941. Their special bond was evident through their many years of marriage. After living in Makoti for a few months, they moved to Chicago to participate in the war effort. Howard worked for Gary Steel Mills and Esther earned a larger paycheck than he did working at Pullman Aircraft in Chicago from 1942-1945. She was proud to tell us that she had her own tool box and worked on the aileron of the B-25 Bombers. She served her country as a Rosie the Riveter of that generation.

After the war, when they returned to North Dakota, they were able to purchase a farm north of Carpio near her parents’ family farm with her saved paychecks. It was then time to start a family. To this union were born two children, Patsy Ann and James Howard. Back home in White Ash Township, Esther was active in Homemakers Club, White Ash Community Club and was a 4-H leader. She loved living on the farm, was an excellent truck driver and was often a go-fer for Howard. She served as secretary/bookkeeper for McGuire Construction for many years. She was very patriotic and spent hours watching the skies in a tower atop the Carpio Fire Hall as a member of the Civil Air Patrol in the 50's. She also sat on many township, city, county and state election boards.

We are very thankful that Esther was a two-time breast cancer survivor (1972 and 1985.) Esther was an active member of the Carpio Lutheran Church, the Carpio Lutheran Church Women and Circle Group, serving in several officer positions, usually secretary because of her beautiful handwriting. She sang alto in the church choir for many years. At age 80 she quit, saying she was too old to sing in choir, although her voice was still lovely. She was a member of the Minot Women's Bowling Association and with her friends bowled in women's leagues. She and Howard also bowled in the Minot Couples League.

After 40 years on the farm she and Howard semiretired and moved to Carpio. In later life, she was a member and officer of the Carpio Senior Citizens and was the local news correspondent for the Kenmare News with her good friend. She loved having her family around and playing games. Many weekends and all holidays were spent with family and she loved the yearly camping trips in the sixties and seventies. Esther was also known for her delicious mouth-watering apple pies, sugar cookies, watermelon pickles and her love of ice cream.

Esther love bowling, sewing, crocheting afghans, playing Scrabble, bridge, whist and pinochle, bingo, crossword and word puzzles and trips to the casino. Many great family hours were spent camping and around a table playing cards or Scrabble. She and Howard loved sports and attended most of the games for the Carpio Cardinals. She loved music and enjoyed singing with and listening to Jim and Kathy sing. Later she and Howard took great pride in their granddaughters’ activities and enjoyed watching them participate in school activities, especially basketball and music. They also loved watching sports on television, especially the Minnesota Twins. They were always there for their family...young and old, supporting them at all times.

After Howard’s death in 2000, she moved into assisted living in Minot. They had been married for nearly 60 years. She settled into an easier life, reading, crocheting scrubbies, playing cards and bingo with the other residents. In 2004 Esther was honored by the Minot Council of Aging for her work as a Rosie the Riveter in the World War II effort. She was very proud of her work as one of the ladies of the 'Greatest Generation' during World War II.

Glad to have shared her life and who will deeply miss her are her daughter Patsy (James) Holland of Bismarck, son James (Kathy) McGuire of Carpio, granddaughters Jennifer (Adam) Frykman of Bottineau, Rebecca McGuire of Mandan, and three great-grandchildren Alivia, Heath and Reese Frykman. One sister-in-law, Eldrice Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Howard, her husband of nearly 60 years, her precious granddaughter, Melissa, her parents Claude & Amelia Johnson, her two sisters, Ada Heglund and Lela Johnson, her four brothers, George, Ronald, Alvah and Neil Johnson, her in-laws Wm. Newton and Hilda McGuire and her many sisters and brothers-in-law.
