Lura Mary Peterson Bonar, 96, passed away February 28. She was born December 24, 1918 to Emma (Heilboch) & Ralph Peterson. Lura married Bernard Virgil Bonar in 1943. They had 4 children: James, Patricia, Margaret & Bernard.

Lura was born at her family home in Globe, Arizona. In 1940, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. Because of her academic performance, Lura was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. Lura then took her internship at the Mayo Clinic, St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota in 1941. After joining the Army she served as a dietician for two years stationed in Santa Barbara. She was proud of her service to her country and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the war, while also working full time, her primary role was to raise her young family in Glendale, California. Lura retired as Head of the Dietary Department with 25 years of service to Saint Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank, California.

After working hard for many years, her retirement brought her great joy. She read, prayed the Rosary, and attended daily Mass. She fulfilled a long-time goal of designing and building her home of 18 years in Frazier Park, California. She also enjoyed much travel, including trips to Japan and Europe. In her life she was an avid hiker and longtime member of the Sierra Club. In 1997 she followed her daughter Patricia and moved to Cedar City.

Lura was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She was honored at being the Prayer Chain Chairperson and leading a Blue Army cell where members gathered weekly to pray the Rosary. In 2004, she was selected as the Catholic Women's Council Woman of the Year. In the final four years of her life Lura continued to swim 3 days a week in an arthritis swim class.

Lura is survived by her children Jim & Carley Bonar, Cedar City; Pat & Wendell Sproul, Cedar City; Peggy Cocagne, Cedar City; Bernie & Leslie Bonar, Escondido, California. Lura leaves 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Lura will be missed greatly. Friends and family will always remember her as kind, compassionate, and full of joy for the life she was able to lead. She was truly an inspiration to all who knew her.

Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 690 S Cove Drive, Cedar City, Utah. Recitation of the Rosary at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 21; at 10:30 am Family Visitation; Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am.
