Patrick A. Cox, 57, Kingsport, died Saturday morning (23 May) after a lingering illness, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Pat, who lived most of his life in Kingsport, was a 1975 graduate of Ketron High School, a 1979 graduate of East Tennessee State University, and attended Appalachian School of Law.

But it was music that was the focus of Pat's life. He was in the marching band, both at Ketron and ETSU. Pat was a teacher, earning a Master's Degree in Music from James Madison University, and was a music teacher and band director at high schools in Independence and Haysi, both in Virginia, and at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he was an Assistant Band Director.

Pat played guitar and sang in a Bluegrass band, Bushy Mountain Boys, based in Lenoir, North Carolina. He was also a songwriter. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Pat acted in several Kingsport Theatre Guild musicals. He was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church and shared with friends there his love for music as well.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Willa Mae Forbes Cox, his mother, and Loyd L. Cox, his father, paternal grandparents Lonnie and Monnie Cox and maternal grandparents Hobert and Rhoda Belle Forbes and an aunt Juanita Hudson.

He is survived by his brother Dale M. Cox, sister-in-law Phyllis Ferrell, nephew Travis Cox and his wife Stephanie, six first cousins and an uncle, Robert Hudson, and other extended family and friends.

There will be memorial service for Pat, Sunday, May 31, at 2:30, at the Holston Valley Universalist Unitarian Church, 136 Bob Jobe Road, Gray, TN (GPS: Johnson City) exit I-26 at Eastern Star. The Reverend Jacqueline Luck will officiate.

East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park has the honor of serving the family of Mr. Cox.
