One Dead, Woman Injured in Cafe-Sidewalk Shooting

One man was dead and a woman seriously wounded late Tuesday in a shooting which began in a cafe and ended on crowded S. St. Mary's St.

Dead was Alvis Gradon (Jack) Foster, 47, 334 E. Mitchell St.

The seriously injured woman was identified as Agnes Clark Foster, 48, 425 Denver Blvd.

Witnesses told police that the couple had been sitting at a table in the Venin-Casa Cafe at 1031 S. St. Mary's St., prior to the shooting.

When they started to leave the cafe without any trace of a noticeable argument, the witnesses related, the man suddenly pulled an old-style German revolver and fired twice. Both shots inside the cafe missed the oman. As she emerged upon the sidewalk he fired two more shots. Both shots hit the woman in the back, one in the left shoulder and the other in the right kidney area.

As the woman slumped to the sidewalk Foster placed the gun behind his right ear and fired again, witnesses told police. He died about two hours later. Justice of the Peace M.D. (Buck) Jones rendered a verdict of suicide in Foster's death.
