At the urging of her husband Charles Lukens and following his death Rebecca inherited the Brandywine Ironworks and turned it into one of the American Industrial Revolution's most successful companies. Under her direction the firm avoided financial collapse and became the major provider of iron boiler plates and track for the expanding railroad industry. Rebecca Lukens is believed to be the first woman in America to head an industrial company.
