Born in Providence he was a son of Clark W. and Alison (Ballantyne) Cate of Johnston.
David served in the United States Coast Guard for twenty-two years before retiring on July 1, 2002. For the past seven years he has been employed as a dispatcher, employed by McAllister Marine Towing & Transportation at the Port of Providence.
He was a Past Master Councilor and former Dad Advisor of Fidelity Chapter, International Order of DeMolay. His Masonic memberships include Harmony Lodge #9 F&AM, Cranston; the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and the Rhode Island Shriners where he was a Past Commander of the Legion of Honor.
He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. David's family remembers him as a loving & supportive husband and father and as an honorable, respectful and selfless man who would often go out of his way to help others.
In addition to his wife and parents he is survived by three sons: Christopher D. Cate of Johnston, Michael D. Cate of Johnston and Jason D. Cate of Johnston who is currently stationed with the United States Army at Fort Lewis, WA; two sisters: Dale A. Antonelli and Kristin L. Harlow both of North Scituate; one brother: Clark F. Cate, USCG, Ret. of Wausaukee, WI; seventeen nieces & nephews and his favorite dog "Dallas".
A committal service, with military honors, was held on Wednesday, February 26th in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Interment followed.
