Charles A. “Chuck” McWilliams, 73, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

A funeral mass for Mr. McWilliams was celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 10 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant with Father Joseph Phung. Burial was in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery with graveside military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard.

Charles Allen McWilliams was born October 25, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Wade Marion and Marilyn Lorraine (nee Ford) McWilliams. He was raised in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1959. During his high school years, Chuck was a member of the MPHS Panther Football team. On September 28, 1968 in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Chuck was united in marriage to Ginger Murphy. Mrs. McWilliams died February 8, 1987 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Chuck entered the United States Air Force to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He was inducted at Ft. Des Moines, IA on February 14, 1962 and received his training at Lackland and Amarillo Air Force Bases. He served as an airplane mechanic with the 380th Organization Maintenance Squadron of the Strategic Air Command. He was honorable discharged at the Plattsburg AFB New York.

Mr. McWilliams was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for a few years. For much of his working career, he was a team leader and safety coordinator for the Goodyear Hose Production Facility in Mt. Pleasant.

Chuck was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Father John Manning Council of Mt. Pleasant. For many years, Chuck was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Officials. He officiated on a team for numerous high school football games in the southeast Iowa area. He had also served a number of years as a coach with the Mt. Pleasant Little League. He enjoyed fish fries, and help supply some of those fish through one of his favorite pastimes, hand fishing or “noodling”.

Those thankful for sharing in Chuck’s life include 2 children: Jill Clay and her husband Andre of Missouri City, TX, and Dustin McWilliams and his best friend Mellissa Stoutenberg of Mt. Pleasant; 5 grandchildren – Zachary McWilliams, Forrest Clay, Nolan Clay, Tallen McWilliams and Kelsey McWilliams and 1 great grandchild, Kiersten McWilliams.

His parents, wife and a sister in infancy, Janet Kay McWilliams, precede Mr. McWilliams in death.
