David grew up in Washington, Iowa, the same as his father before him. When he was 17 he being a member of the National Guard in Washington, was sent to the Mexican border to help guard Texas from the infamous Poncha Villa, who was burning and looting the American villages and farms on the US side of the border. Following this experience he was sent to France to fight in WW I. He became a courier, carrying messages between commanders, and was gassed. After being in the hospital for a time, he was sent home to recuperate. He attended Monmouth College where he completed 3 years, he then married Augusta Emilie Lucas from Winterset, and became an insurance salesman, first in Des Moines, and then in Park Ridge, Illinois."
