Mrs. Gloria Ryan of Lake Charles, LA, died May 26, 2015 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. She was 90. It was her fourth battle with cancer, previously having survived breast cancer, and lymphomas twice. Born Gloria Catherine Rhodes on Nov. 13, 1924 in Lake Arthur, LA, she was the third of three children. At age 10, Gloria’s father Wallace died, leaving her mother Kate to raise her and older brothers, Cyril and Curtis—a kindness Gloria repaid many times over as her extended family lost members and orphaned her cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A graduate of Lake Charles High School, Gloria worked as a secretary at the Chennault Air Force Base during World War II, and on Sept. 9, 1945, married Army Engineer Corpsman George W. “Jug” Ryan III, who passed away in 2011. During their sixty-seven years of marriage, Gloria Ryan worked as a medical office secretary, and was a congregant at St. Margaret’s Church, and active in local social clubs such as the PPG Wives Club, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Altar Society. With an interest in the fine arts, Gloria made ceramic pottery, painted in oils, and crafted jewelry with her children, who continue to run The Family Jewels home business she helped to found.

A graceful and generous matriarch, Gloria Ryan bore three daughters, Mrs. Irene Theriot, Mrs. Sheila Bernard, and Mrs. Kate Cholley, and left with them to cherish her memory are Irene, and husband Vernon’s children Todd Theriot, his wife Missy and their children: Hannah, Ashlyn, Natalie, and Grace Ann; Allen Theriot and his partner Tina Hudson, and children: Tyler, Alexis, and Alyson, along with their birth-mother Anissa Theriot; and Paula Theriot, and son Hayden; Sheila and husband Bart Bernard’s children Jennifer and her husband Joaquin Torrans and their children Miranda and Henry Torrans; Josh and wife Crystal, their children Armor and Ronin, and daughter to be born in November; and Kate and husband Mark Cholley’s daughter, Kristen.

Friends and family will be received at Johnson Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. and will resume on Friday from 8:00 AM until leaving for the church at 12:30 p.m. The Mass for Christian Burial for Mrs. Gloria Ryan will be held at St. Margaret’s Church, Friday, May 29 at 1 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Highland Memory Gardens. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate.

The pallbearers will be: Vernon, Todd, Allen, Tyler, and Hayden Theriot; Bart Bernard, Mark Cholley, and Joaquin Torrans.
