William Wells Rich, one of the best known and most active figures in state and political affairs in former years, passed away at the home of his daughter In Duluth last Friday, and after funeral services Sunday at his old home In Marshall, was carried to his last resting place there beside his wife, whose death occurred a year ago. W. W. Rich was a close and intimate friend of William H. Grimshaw. formerly of Minneapolis, and during the service of the latter as United States marshal was for many years his deputy. He was born at Lake Geneva. Wis., Feb. 24, 1853. He came to Minnesota in 1874 and took up land In Lyon county which he farmed until 1889. He was for seven years a member of the state board of equalization and served under former Governor Merriam as state dairy and food commissioner. In 1893 he removed with his family to St. Paul where he resided until 1917. He was a well known member of the house of representatives In former years and later custodian of government buildings In St. Paul. He was a a close friend and adviser of former Senator Clapp and managed the campaign preceding the election of the latter to the United States senate. He is survived by two brothers. John H. Rich of Minneapolis and George B. Rich of Lake Geneva, Wis.; a daughter. Mrs. B. J. Miller of Duluth and a Son, Ralph W. Rich Great Falls, Mont.
