On Oct 20, 1862 in Derby, VT he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. On Dec 30, 1862 he was mustered in as a Private in Company M 1st VT Cavalry; on June 21, 1865 he was transferred to Company F.
Joseph was a POW at Herndon Station on March 17, 1863 and paroled on March 18, 1863. He was mustered out on Aug 9, 1865.
His wife, Auria, died on Dec 28, 1886 in Milan, NH of black jaundice and yellow fever. Her death certificate didn't list a place of burial, but it may have been in Milan.
