Winfield's parents are Williamson Carter, born 1779 in Virginia, and Martha (Patsy) England, born 1795.
During the Civil War, he served on the Union side in Company F of the 12th Regiment of Tennessee Calvary. He volunteered on 7 Jan 1864. He was captured near Columbia, Tennessee on 24 Nov 1864. He either escaped or was released from a facility near Maysville, Georgia in 1865.
