Wes was born in Gering, Nebraska to Walter "Buck" and Emily Roberts. He grew up on a cattle and wheat ranch with one younger brother, Marvin, and three older sisters, Beth, Betty and Grace, and had many cousins in the area. He lived in the shadow of Chimney Rock, a landmark on the Oregon Trail which left a great impression on Wes and a focus on traveling and American history that lasted throughout his lifetime. Wes attended McGrew High School and Scottsbluff Junior College. He had great memories of Nebraska, but loved Oregon as his home state.

Wes served in the United States Navy during World War II until the war's end. Most of his years of service were spent aboard ship in the Pacific Theater on the USS Gervais. He kept in touch with shipmates at reunions for years.

Wes lived in Monmouth, Oregon and retired from Western Oregon University in 1989, after working as a civilian employee at military bases on Mount Hebo, Oregon and Camp Adair, Oregon. He worked at Oregon State University for over ten years prior to WOU. Wes was the director of construction and physical maintenance at the universities where he worked.

Wes was always ready for travel and enjoyed RV'ing with his wife, Leta, whom he married in 1948. They celebrated their 25th anniversary in Hawaii, and their 50th anniversary in Europe, and traveled extensively in the continental United States, Canada, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand in their retirement. At the time of his death, Wes and Leta had been married 66 happy years. Wes enjoyed his family and all others he met. Wes and Leta moved to Capital Manor, Salem, Oregon in October 2000, where he became well loved by others with his smile, humor, his "how do" and many loveable Wesley traits. He encouraged everyone he knew.

Wes is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Leta; four children, Valorie Freeman (Salem), Wesley "Randy" (Colleen/Washington), Bruce (Washington) and Victoria (Salem); and twin grandsons, Charles and Patrick (Washington).

Celebration of life service will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Capital Manor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Capital Manor Foundation, 1955 Salem Dallas Hwy NW, Salem, OR 97304.
