HUGH McLELLAN 1841 - 1911
Hugh McLellan the oldest son of John and Marion McLellan was born on August 17th 1841 on board the "Thomas Arbuthnot" off the Cape of Good Hope, whilst John and Marion were immigrating to Victoria Australia.
He came to Southland, New Zealand, and married on the 14th March, 1870, Mary Simpson McIntyre, the eldest daughter of Hugh and Grace McIntyre who had come from Victoria in the late 1860's.
After their marriage Hugh and Mary went to Hawke's Bay in the North Island, where Hugh was a shepherd on Sir Donald McLean's "Marackakahau" Station near Napier. Sometime in the late 1870s Hugh bought a Station inland towards Taupo, and after selling from there, they were on a Station called "Otane".
Hugh had placed his money in a Glasgow Bank and he received a message from his neighbours to shift his stock onto their land as the Bank had failed. Hugh stuck to his agreement and lost everything.
Due to an accident he never worked land again, but became a storekeeper at Clyde, near Wairoa. They had between 1871 and 1894 eleven children, four daughters (one stillborn) and seven sons, one of whom died at the age of five. Two daughters and one son never married.
Hugh died in December, 1911 after an accident falling from the back of a dray, on his elder son Hugh's farm near Opunake Taranaki. Mary died in September 1923 and both are buried in the Opunake Cemetery Taranaki NZ.
Hugh and Mary could have visited Hamilton Victoria in 1874 when John McLellan died as their eldest daughter Marion Elizabeth was baptised at Cape Wrath in December, 1874. Following are the names of their descendants as far as my research has taken me up til 1991. Ina McLellan - Great Great Granddaugter.

Hugh arrived in Auckland New Zealand in 1870 onboard the "Gotheenburg". His occupation was 'Miner'.
