BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -It's been more than two weeks since Ashley Lane was killed, and police said they don't know much more today than they did the day the 37-year-old woman's body was found on a Woodlawn sidewalk.
"Basically this is a whodunit,'' said Birmingham homicide Detective Talana Brown. "We don't have anything at all."
A woman called Birmingham police in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday, May 14, 2013, to report there was a female dead at Second Avenue North and 50th Street. That call came in about 5:40 a.m. Officers arrived on the scene to find Lane on her back, partially on the sidewalk, and partially in the grass. She had, the detective said, been shot in the back. "We canvassed the neighborhood, we talked to neighbors,'' Brown said. "Some people reported hearing one gunshot, but no one looked outside." Brown said investigators haven't been able to determine why Lane was in that area, or what she was doing when she was shot. "It seemed like she was walking," she said.
